Custom Load Cell Framework

A customer needed to build a framework to adapt their loadcells and rollers. Could the machine frame fit inside the confines of the current framework of the production line?

Challenge

A company was looking for someone to build a framework to adapt their loadcells and rollers. Application required ICS to fit in the confines of an existing piece of machinery and meet the stringent specifications of the end-user. Carbon fiber and woven type substrate material are used in the process therefore roller spacing is very critical.

The challenge was to keep the load cell roller and idler roller within ¾” of an inch spacing or less (crown to crown). Due to the size of the load cell assembly and bearing insert this created interference fit due to the narrow gap that was specified between the diameter of the small rollers.

Results

ICS was able to:

  • Have meetings with engineering to develop full scope of work statement.
  • Review the constraints to see what we can come up with to be able to fit a loadcell assembly into the manufacturing process.
  • Create ACAD drawings for thick wall frames and bored a recessed area to the inside of the frames and bored a recessed area to the outside of frame.
  • Fit idler roller bearings to the inside bore and fit the loadcells to the outside bore.
  • Make the load cell roller journals to be longer in order to go through the machine frames and into the loadcells.
  • Design the machine frame to fit inside the current confines of the current framework of the production line.
  • Design loadcell assembly to be installed with ease by adding Key stock to inside of the loadcell plates.
